Hello there! It has been a LONG time since I’ve written a post here. I do apologize and hope that you all have been following along over on Instagram.
Since my last blog post we sold our home in Washington, DC (more on that in another post) and moved to Maryland about 30 minutes outside of DC. Over the past few months we have been renovating and updating our new home which was a short-sale and needed A LOT of cosmetic work. It took us nearly 3 months to close on our new home after our home had already sold. Again, another story for another day. As a result it was very important for us to finish JC’s room first. He experienced a lot of transitions and we wanted him to be settled. We are so very pleased with how it turned out.
The first big change from JC’s nursery was his big boy bed. Like, a really BIG BOY bed {similar}. We opted for a full size bed that he can grow into and keep for years to come. Many people have asked why we did not opt for a Montessori floor bed. There are a number of reasons including a dust sensitivity that would make sleeping so close to carpet uncomfortable for him and because we felt he was beyond that stage honestly. He can easily get in and out of this bed, similar to a floor bed, but for added safety he sleeps with inflatable bumpers to prevent falls.
The one BIG thing we carried over from his nursery were the large gold letters over his bed. We will never ever get rid of these. They were purchased at Hobby Lobby about 3 years ago. They were originally matte black but we painted them this gold color. I am sure you can find similar items online.
We rounded out his room with this bench and these side tables from Amazon. The bench is perfect for reading bedtime stories and for getting dressed in the morning. The side tables are small enough to hold some small plants and his white noise machine.
The rug was purchased from Rugs USA and adds just the right amount of print and texture to compliment the white walls. If you live in an apartment or rental and can’t paint or add fixtures, rugs are a great way to change the feel of a room.
If you have been following on Instagram you know that we moved all of his toys into his walk-in closet. The only items we keep in his room aside from clothes and bedding are his books. We found the most amazing book bin at Target and love how it works in this space. I will do a full post on the “play closet” soon. Above the books is a map of my husband’s home country of Sierra Leone. It added a nice personal touch and was an inexpensive way to add some artwork.
This room was such a labor of love and has turned out to be the inspiration behind a lot of the design choices in the remainder of the house. How about you? Have you transitioned your little one to a toddler bed? How did you decide on the decor? I’d love to see your toddler rooms. Feel free to tag me on Instagram {@polishedplayhouse}.
Talk to you soon,

I’ve been looking for these letters everywhere and can’t find them. I’ve searched on their website, different stores to no avail. :’(
The room looks amazing, you did a great job, I love the curtains.
